It’s been a long while since I first put this site up. At first I had the grand vision that it would become a ridefinder, ridetracker, and a community hub for cyclists. I was quick to rush out and secure a domain and hosting, threw up a placeholder site, and then… crickets.
I never followed through with this idea. It was in head, certainly, but not naggingly so. It sat for years without updates. My constant reminder of it was the many daily notifications of attempted brute force logins to my then wordpress site. But I had paid my hosting up for 3 years, so it didn’t hurt me any to just leave it there.
All the while I had been quietly building other websites, with what I’ve come to appreciate as being superior to wordpress. These sites are very fast, very secure, and best of all, don’t cost me a thing to host. My first few sites that were built this way were written in a Static Site Generator known as Hugo. This site, at least the current iteration, is written in Svelte. Let me tell ya, I really like building sites with Svelte.
So a month or so ago, I saw the bill for my wordpress hosting looming. It gave me a deadline to get a new site up and running, which you are looking at now. Will this site become a ridefinder, ridetracker, community hub? No, at least I don’t think so. Priorities and interests change, I guess. But I still like the wheelsuckr branding, and my new vision, I think, ties into it nicely.
I don’t think that I’m ready to divulge my new grand vision just yet. That got me nowhere before. But what I can say is that the focus of this whatever it is will be more on the building of websites. Bike references? Sure. I may even write some of the blog posts that I had originally planned for wheelsuckr. But the bulk of the content will be on building for the web, specifically fast sites that cost nothing or next to nothing to put up.
This site will be my main playground, and it may change frequently (or at least drastically). It’s pretty rough at the time this post is going up, but I just wanted to get it out the door.
If this sounds interesting to you, keep an eye out here. At first there will likely be more in this blog for devs- specifically regarding Svelte, Svelte-Kit, JavaScript and more. Later on I’ve got some ideas cooking. But again, I don’t want to get ahead of myself.
